I just watched a great video clip on the Social Media Examiner blog where Joe Pulizzi discusses what it means to have a "Content First Mentality." I was struck by how accurate this concept is when it comes to business blogging. What is a content first mentality? Well, in this video Michael Stelzner does a good job capturing the definition when he recaps Joe's thoughts:
It all starts with creating good content. Businesses that focus on that task first, are more likely to reach these positive end results. Many businesses do not have a content first mentality when launching a business blogging or social media strategy. They've heard that starting a blog, tweeting and having a Facebook page can help drive traffic, which can lead to growth. This is all true, IF you have valuable content to share within these outlets.
So if you find yourself struggling with your content marketing strategy, try taking Joe Pulizzi's advice and adopt a Content First Mentality. Here are three ways to help get you mentally right with your content strategy:
"If you build great content and you add social media sharing mechanisms to it, a sub-segment of your audience will naturally want to share that content by Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, whatever; and that will bring in new traffic. And that will lead to growth."

Here are three ways to help get you mentally right with your content strategy:
- Think about the pain-points that keep your customers up at night and write content that helps them address these pains. (again, this tip is courtesy of Joe Pulizzi and the video linked above)
- Solicit Guest Posts from industry experts and business partners. Showcasing blog content from people outside of your own organization shows that you care about offering diverse opinions for the betterment of your audience. Here is an example of this practice from the Compendium blog
- Ask for your thoughts and comments from your readers about the posts you write. Some of the most helpful content I read on a good blog happens when readers react to the content in the post; adding to its value.
